LCD Vs LED HDTV – Get the Facts!

When considering the question about LCD televisions versus LED televisions, the first thing to know is the difference between the two. There are two kinds of popular displays today with respect to television screens. The LED stands for light emitted diodes display and the LCD stands for liquid crystal displays.

Many people are in a dilemma when considering whether to buy an LED or LCD screen display for their computers or for their televisions. LEDs are the latest in the market for display screens and are nearly similar to the LCD screens.

The difference is that they have a highly advanced feature of backlighting, which offers an advantage over the LCD TVs. The LCD panels are lit up by the light emitting diodes in case of the LED televisions.

The most important difference between the LED televisions and LCD is that LED is more efficient in the power usage and is 40% better. LED televisions also have a longer life along with a lesser weight. There are certain specific advantages that LED televisions have over LCD ones. LED televisions are definitely more expensive than LCD TVs by about 20%.

Diodes that emit light are used as a source of light for the LED television and the image produces is also more vibrant and colorful than that produced by an LCD TV. The colors are very realistic and the blacks are not dark grey as in the LCD TV and so they can achieve a higher contrast ratio.

The refresh rate of LED TVs is also higher and this helps in watching movies and sports in a better way as they have a lot of motion. The major drawback in the LCD display used to be that for obtaining dark areas on the screen, the backlight was blocked, but it resulted in reducing the contrast ratio and so the image had less of finer details.

Another important factor to be considered is that the environmental impact of LED TVs is comparatively less. This is because LCD televisions use mercury which affects the environment negatively. The power factor should also be considered, as an LED TV uses less power. The LCD or plasma television is more costly to operate, so for those who are concerned about eco-friendly products, the LED TV is a better option.

When comparing the LED and LCD Televisions, another difference is that the LED televisions are much lighter, as their thickness is only about 1/3 that of the LCD ones. Due to this, the weight gets reduced by about half and can be very easy to mount.

Color accuracy is also better in the LED televisions. In case of the white LED backlights, there is not much difference between the LED and LCD displays, but in case of the RGB color lights, the backlight of LED TVs turns out to be superior with realistic color.

The viewing angle of the LCD is also affected because when the angle is wider by more than 30 degrees from the center, the contrast ratio of the image is reduced, whereas the viewing angle does not affect the contrast ratio in case of the LED televisions.

In case of action video, the response rate for LCD much lesser and so there is a blurring of images, whereas there is no lag problem in LED TVs.
